Science and Technology (S&T)

Science and Technology (S&T) is a key sector that plays a crucial role in the social stability and security of a nation. It is imperative to factor it in when developing national strategies and policies.

To fully consider S&T for development of policies in an informed manner, it is:

• vital to understand the current state of S&T within the Maldives;
• identify areas requiring support for development;
• understand the impact S&T can have on long term national development;
• develop a road map to achieve goals in a systematic manner.

To address the aforementioned items, the following is proposed:

• Evaluate existing government policies and any other relevant literature concerning S&T in the Maldives.
• Carry out a survey to
• find out the sub-fields of S&T within the Maldives and understand the role it plays in impacting the country (e.g., from an economic perspective);
• evaluate the human capital within the Maldives related to S&T fields;
• figure out niche areas (e.g., development of marine technology) within Maldives that S&T could help improve;
• understand the potential impact that could be generated in areas where skill shortages exist.

• Development of a 30-year road map for the Maldives S&T sector to adopt to make future policies. This would also involve assessing existing literature on how other nations have done similar studies to learn from the challenges they faced.
